The Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition (JISSN) published by BioMed Central has been undergoing a citation review to determine it’s official ISI Impact Factor.  A journals impact factor represents the average number of times articles published in that journal have been cited in the literature over the past two years. A journal’s Impact Factor is often used as a means of assessing the quality of articles published within the journal and impact the journal is making on the field. The unofficial impact factor in 2009 for the JISSN was 0.54.  According to the 2011 Journal Citation Report (JCR), the 2010 Impact Factor for JISSN is an impressive 2.68. This places the JISSN  in the top 12% (9th of 79 journals) of journals in the ‘Sports Sciences’ category and in the top 32% (22nd out of 70 journals) of journals in the ‘Nutrition & Dietetics’ category.  Notably, the JISSN had a higher IF than the International Journal of Sports Medicine (2.38), International Journal of Sports Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism (2.23), European Journal of Applied Physiology (2.21), Journal of Athletic Training (1.99), Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research (1.85), and Research Quarterly (1.19) in the Sport Science category; and, had a higher Impact Factor than Nutrition and Metabolism (2.35), Nutrition Research (2.09), the Journal of the American College of Nutrition (1.95) in the nutrition/dietetic category.

Dr. Kreider served as founding Editor-In-Chief of the JISSN from 2004 – 2008 and currently serves as Co-Editor-In-Chief of the JISSN with Dr. Joey Antonio (NOVA Southeastern University) and Dr. Doug Kalman (Miami Research Associates).  Researchers within the ESNL have contributed a number of original research articles, scientific reviews, and position stands that have been among the most frequently accessed articles on the JISSN website and most cited in the literature. According to Dr. Kreider,

The impressive first official Impact Factor of the JISSN is not only a reflection on the quality of articles published in the JISSN but also a tribute to researchers in the ESNL who have contributed a number of original research articles, reviews, and position stands to the JISSN over the years. It also demonstrates how the International Society of Sports Nutrition is leading the way in promoting the science and application of evidence-based sports nutrition and supplementation.”

Details of the journal’s new Impact Factor will be updated on the JISSN journal website and other relevant places in the near future.  BioMed Central will be sending mailings to the journal’s Editorial Board, previous authors and BioMed Central registrants to let them know the good news, as well as mailing further relevant contacts to promote the journal.
